Understanding Play
Reflection on Play and Learning
Before the session, I thought play was something children did just for fun, a break from real learning. Now I understand that play is a powerful way to learn, not a waste of time. It is meaningful, purposeful, and essential for children's growth.
Research shows that through children develop creativity, problem-solving skills, confidence, and the ability to build relationships with others. When children are denied play, the consequences are serious. They may struggle with emotional intelligence, have weaker memories, underdeveloped physical coordination, and lower cognitive ability. This tells us that play is not optional, it is a basic need for healthy development of children.
However, I believe we need to ask a question everyone if the value of play is so beneficial then why are so many classrooms still ignoring it? In Bhutan, many teachers and parents continue to prioritize textbooks, grades, and examinations over playful learning. This is not simply a matter of preference, it reflects a deeper belief that academic performance measures the child's success. This belief needs to be challenged.
Some argue that play reduces discipline and wastes classroom time. A child who is engaged, curious, and enjoying the learning process is not being undisciplined, they are learning more effectively. The real discipline problem may be in classrooms where children are bored and disengaged.
There are also real, practical barriers like large class sizes, limited materials, and pressure to finish the curriculum. These challenges are genuine and should not be dismissed nevertheless they point to a system problem, not a problem with play itself. Schools and policymakers need to create conditions where teachers can teach playfully without fear of falling behind.
So lastly, purposeful play, when planned well, can make learning more enjoyable and more effective at the same time. The goal is not to choose between play and learning rather it is to understand that, for children, they are the same thing.
